Accessibility Improvement Grant Program

Latrobe City Council

It’s really encouraging to see local government backing accessible tourism with real funding.

The Access Agency worked with Latrobe City Council to design and deliver a new grants program helping tourism operators make their businesses more accessible — turning good intentions into upgrades on the ground for the small businesses and not-for-profits who often can’t absorb the cost alone.

The Access Agency was engaged in a holistic manner:

  • Helping determine the grant eligibility criteria
  • Assessing grant submissions
  • Running an indepth, in-person information session
  • Designing promtional material

Accessibility Improvement Grants offers Latrobe City small businesses and not-for-profits funding for accessibility upgrades including tactile signage and wayfinding, step-free access, visitor audio guides, staff training in access and inclusion, and accessible toilet facilities.

  • $25,000 maximum funding — Major round
  • $1,000 maximum funding — Minor round, no co-contribution required

Every operator who takes up this grant makes the whole destination a little more welcoming. Programs like this are a model other councils and destinations can adopt too.
